4th Grade Homework/Homefun
Orchestrating Student Success
Homework is an important tool for reinforcing new concepts and for repetitive practice which helps the hippocampus do its job. "Hippo what?" you say? Well the hippocampus is the part of the brain that transfers "short-term memory" to "long-term memory."
The fact is nothing that I teach in school becomes long-term memories for my students at school. That process of what I teach becoming long-term memories takes place while my students' sleep and it takes about 3-7 sleep cycles. Thus, repetition makes it more likely that my students are processing what I'm trying to teach them at school. Also, please do your homework right before bed because if it is the video games/TV right before bed guess what the hippocampus is probably processing? Yep, video games/TV - not what I taught at school that day! Does this mean no video games? NO! Just not right before bed. Right before bed is HIPPO TIME and that should be the time students look over their homework and get their brain on learning.
I don't believe homework should be a daily drugery which parents hate not to mention the poor students. However, that is what most people think about homework. That is why we are going to call it Homefun instead of homework. Doesn't that sound better? Well, homefun assignments should not take your child very long to complete. There will be times that there is a project but it won't be too much work if procrastination isn't present. I'll give plenty of time for my students to be successful. Now, what really are my expectations when it comes to homefun assignments? Well it is simple these are the three rules:
